I've Got Hang-Ups...
But I'm Dealing With Them

Organizing With Hooks!

A few weeks ago I went to the store to get a couple of hooks to use on the inside of the cupboard door underneath my kitchen sink. I wanted to be able to hang wet towels there to dry before I tossed them into the dirty laundry basket.

Well, when I got to the store and was perusing the hardware section I became intrigued with the variety of hook options there are out there! I had no idea!

They've got hooks for every conceivable hanging need.  And even better, if you go with the 3M Command Brand hooks,
they are all completely removable and won't damage whatever you decide to hang them on (just in case you decide it was a lame idea in the first place).

The little wheels in my head began spinning with the possibilities. The two little hooks I went to buy suddenly turned into MANY hooks! I bought the ones you see here on my FIRST trip to the store...and then went back for more. lol.

First I addressed the hooks for under the kitchen sink. I added the two I initially wanted....and then decided to add two more to the opposite cupboard door. You never know....I might need them!

I was off and running! Next I attacked the inside of the pantry door where I came up with the BRILLIANT (to me at least) idea to put a hook to hang my broom and dust pan on! Currently they were propped up just inside the pantry door, always in the way of something.

Once the broom and dust pan were hung up I couldn't believe I hadn't done this YEARS ago! SO simple!

By the way...putting these puppies up is ridiculously easy. Literally ONE, TWO, THREE and you're done.  No need for hammers or screwdrivers or tools of any kind! (Unless you count your thumb as a tool, which technically you could I guess.)

The next thing I decided to tackle was one of my pet peeves...no designated place to put my purse. Usually it ends up on top of the clothes washer, on the kitchen table or on the phone desk. It seems to always be in the way AND never where I thought I left it!
Not anymore! Now it has a place of "honor" directly inside the door in our laundry/mudroom that leads to the garage. I hang it up the second I come in...and grab it the second before I leave. And I ALWAYS know where it is! Once again...I cannot help asking myself...why did I wait so long?!

Since I was in the laundry/mudroom I decided to address a couple of other areas I thought were in need of some hanging options.
I decided to attach a couple of hooks to the inside of the cupboard above my washing machine to hang my new prized possessions....my microfiber cleaning cloths! I wanted to keep those babies in a place where they would be "safe" from the uneducated in my household who might grab them to use for changing the oil in the car or something equally nefarious! I love my "boys", but I don't trust them to know the difference between an expensive microfiber cleaning cloth and a ratty old rag. You know what I mean??

And finally in the laundry/mudroom I decided to hang up two hooks on opposite cupboards to hang a small "clothesline" of sorts.....for those times I have a piece of laundry I just don't want to put in the dryer. I know it looks a little odd, but I LOVE IT! And the great thing is it's completely removable. I can take it down and put it back up any time my little heart desires. When the hubster saw this...I think he began to worry I was "losing it".

But then he went into our bathroom and was CONVINCED I had already LOST IT!

Honestly, I thought this was a BRILLIANT idea! He thinks it's ridiculous. What do YOU think??? Feel free to be honest...I won't be offended if you think I'm a few cards short of a full deck like the hubster does. Because you're probably right. But that doesn't change the fact that I LOVE this idea! lol.  I HATED that brush holder thingie that sat on the floor and was always gross. Of course I might "come to my senses" sometime down the road...and then the beauty of completely REMOVABLE HOOKS will come into play. :-)

And that concludes the grand tour of all my "hang-ups".  For now.  I still have half a dozen hooks I haven't used yet....I'm sure I'll conjure up something else for the hubster to shake his head at. :-)

Sharing my "hang-ups" with the world  is today's.....

  1. I just found your blog a few weeks ago, and I love it! I like this idea, but I have to tell you the hooks are NOT totally removable on all surfaces. We found out the hard way. We have a rental home and the girls who lived there went wild with these hooks. After they moved, we had to remove them. The sticky part stayed adhered to the flat paint and some doors. It took a couple of hours to remove most. The ones on the ceiling are still there! I use these hooks but be careful where you apply them!

  2. Way to rain on my parade Stephanie! lol! Just teasing. :-) Good word of warning!

  3. I'm sorry! I use them still...just selective about surface...love your blog!!!

  4. They are removable if you just use Googone to remove any left over remains.
I too LOVE hooks of all sorts and sizes.

  5. I like the theory behind hanging your toilet bowl brush but I would be afraid of what any leftover cleaner would do to the wall it was resting on. Even if you do the daily swish with no cleaner at all and let it rest on the bowl to dry for a while it is still going to be damp.

I recently bought hooks to hang my measuring cups/spoons inside one of the kitchen cupboard spice door. I didn't realize how much noise they were going to make every.single.time I opened that cupboard. It drove me nuts that they banged around so much that I took them all down and put them back in the drawer.

  6. Great ideas on hanging up the broom, dustpan, and toilet brush. I have boys, and for some reason there is always "stuff" on the floor that shouldn't be there, and my brush didn't come with a holder (nasty or not), so I have to pick that nasty brush handle up and wash the brush before I can clean the commode. So not what I want to be touching - there are just not gloves long enough for that! Offer to let your husband clean the commode if he thinks it's silly to hang it up!

  7. Which hook did you buy for your broom? I've been begging my DH to put up a hook (a traditional metal one that screws into a stud through the sheet rock) from my broom in the mudroom. If I could just get the job done with a 1-2-3 and an adhesive hook, well, glory be! So... which one is strong enough to hold a broom? Is there one called a broom hook?

  9. I, too, am absolutely in love with your blog. I do think you're a little cuckoo, and that's why I just can't get enough of you! Haha. You're right- men can not be trusted with good rags! I have to hide mine, too.

  10. Another bit of warning. We lived in an older house that we were renting & decided to use the Command hooks. When we went to remove them, they took the paint off & left visible drywall. I wont be using them again.

  11. I like the idea of a hook for the commode cleaning brush, but (sorry to say), I don't like the brush hanging against the wall. I suppose the brush is clean every time you hang it, but perhaps you could put a piece of something that is protective against the wall, where the brush is laying?

  12. Awesome input everyone! Thank you! I know the toilet brush thing isn't a perfect solution...and to be honest, I wouldn't hang it in the hall/guest bathroom! lol. But in MY bathroom..I'm ok with it. For now at least. :-)

Ruth...there is a "Broom hook" (although I don't think that's what they're actually called) but I didn't know they had such thing before either. They're cool because they swivel out from the wall/door. Look for the Command WIRE Hooks. (I wish I could post pictures in the comment...I need to look into that.)

  14. I'm so glad I read this post. Even though I know about 3M's hooks, and even have one on my front door for seasonal wreaths, it just never clicked before that I could use these to create storage solutions in our travel trailer. Not sure why it even 'clicked' today, since that's not what you're doing, but seeing the pictures made it click, lol.

    Thanks for the idea!

  15. They really are addicting, aren't they? It seems like the minute you put one up you think of a hundred other ways to use them. I also have some hanging on the back of the closet door for necklaces/belts that I wear the most often. For the measuring cup issue, mine are hanging just under the upper cabinets on the backsplash - no banging every time the door is closed. Jillee, if you put the hook a little lower, you can let the brush hang over the rim and into the trash can. I sorta did that with the scooper for the cat box and it works pretty good. Renna, we actually live most of the time in our camper, so be forewarned: Where I have attached Command hooks on to the wallboard (the stuff that looks like wallpaper but actually is wallboard) it's caused the paper to separate from the backing and leave a little bubble behind. This only seems to be an issue where I'm hanging some decent weight. One is where the cutting board was hanging, and the other is a little wire basket by the bed that holds both remotes for the tv and the one for the fan.

  16. I LOVE these hooks and have used them for a few years and have never had a problem with them leaving a mark or damaging the surface they were on. I also them to hold the toilet brush, but I put the hook on the side of the toilet tank instead of the wall. I figure it won't damage the tank and it's not so "out there" when you walk into the bathroom. Also you can buy replacement strips for them so you can use the hooks over and over in different places. Oh, and I REALLY like the picture hanger strips! It's like velcro and you can use 2 per picture and they stay straight!

  17. I LOVE your toilet brush hanging on the wall! It's funny and fun! Your ideas are so great, I look here all the time for cleaning ideas and they all work - which is great, cuz I don't like to! Work, I mean! Hang whatever you want wherever you want - you're awesome!

  18. I like the hook for the toilet but I'd want it a bit lower so the brush doesn't touch the wall but hangs right over the trash.
I prop my brush between the seat and the bowl till it dries, then drop it into a bag before it's put with the cleaning stuff though.

  19. Hanging the brush on the side of the tank!! Why didn't I think of that!?!? Just when I think I'm being so clever....sheesh. lol.
This is why I LOVE all the comments! I always KNOW you are all going to just IMPROVE on anything I post. :-) Thank you!!

  20. What if you put the hook on the side of the toilet so it's not so obvious?

... Okay, wait, now I just saw that someone (many someones) already suggest that - face palm!

    New follower! Love the blog!

  21. I have also had trouble removing the hooks on certain surfaces. I did read a blog that said if you heat it up really well on a high heat setting of a blow dryer that it will soften and let go a lot easier. The ideas of hanging the toilet brush and litter scoop over the trash are great! Where I use them is inside cabinet doors and regular doors. On my pantry door I put up a see through door organizer and stash a bunch of little and random pantry items. I also punch two small holes in the back of the cardboard box that my garbage sacks come in and hang them by the wire style hooks on the inside of cabinet door. Last, I used plastic magazine holders that had kind of an open weave on the side that I hung from the wire hooks. They hold phone books, plastic wrap, foil, etc. I love these things! And NO nail holes. Vicki from MO

  22. I think the clothesline idea is brilliant. I think I'll put one up over my bathtub for washcloths.

  23. I love the hooks and got a ton of the command hooks on clearance after christmas. For the most part they are bigger hooks since they were for wreaths but I just love them and love how easy they come off. Now you have given me courage to go hog wild :).

  24. I love these hooks and have been using them for years. I have never had a problem with them sticking when I was trying to remove them. In fact I have had more problems with them coming unstuck when I didn't want them to. This usually happens after about a year. So just be careful if you hang something breakable. I also love using the Velcro strips to hang pictures. It keeps them in place and allows me to easily readjust without putting multiple holes in the wall. I can also easily take down the frames to change the pictures or reorganize.

Hooks are fabu! One of the posters up thread asked about hooks to hand a broom on. I've got a better solution, get some rings to make all of those things you want to hang up hang-able regardless of the hook. If you go to Walmart, in the office supply section they have binder rings in a package. Last time I went they had plain and colored and in a couple of sizes, 1 inch, 2 inch etc. They hinge and snap locked. So you run one through the broom hole, mop hole, swiffer duster, whatever and hey presto it will hang on darn near any hook.

This way you can just worry about making sure the hook is the right size and weight to hold what you are hanging and not worrying about it the hook will go through the hole.
