I want to begin this post by saying I am NO EXPERT on Essential Oils. Far from it actually. My Mom, and my sisters and nieces could all give you much more information than me on this subject. I am just getting acquainted with all the wonderful and amazing applications for these oils that have been being used to centuries.
But, since it seems like a large number of the things I post mention the use of "essential oils" in them, I thought I would at least try to give a BASIC outline of what they are and how they work for those who are unfamiliar with them (like I was up until a few months ago!) For those of you who ARE experts out there...I hope you will humor me in my attempt and feel free to add your comments! The comments section is such a great way to share our combined knowledge.
"One Good Thing" that inspired this post today is an experience we had at our house last week. The hubster arrived home from work on Thursday night looking like "something the cat dragged in". Poor guy...he'd been hit with the flu bug....HARD! Fever, aches, chills, the whole nine yards. Two of my sisters happened to be visiting and both know quite a bit about the use of essential oils. They quickly came up with what oils might help alleviate his symptoms. Since we don't own a diffuser (yet!) the other option was to take the oils and rub them directly onto your feet...which he did. He went to bed early and the next morning felt completely better! No nausea, no fever, no aches, no chills. Just a little bit of a cough. He actually headed off to work! I couldn't believe it!
This is just ONE of a dozens of "stories" I could tell you that have occurred in my family and extended family. We are definitely becoming firm believers in the benefits of essential oils.
Essential oils are scented oils derived from the leaves, bark, seeds or fruit of plants. Plants have these scents for luring pollinators and warding off predators. Some plants, like the tea tree, produce their aroma as an antifungal for disease prevention.
Using essential oils to treat illnesses and conditions, can be traced back thousands of years. The recent trend towards more holistic approaches to wellness have led to the "rediscovery" of essential oil health applications.
Uses of Essential Oils
Essential oils are used in a wide range of emotional and physical applications.
They are usually administered by diffusing in the air, applying to the skin, or taking internally as dietary supplements.
Aromatic Uses
Certain essential oils, when diffused in the air, can be very stimulating while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also purify air of unwanted odors and some airborne pathogens. Essential oils can also be used as cleansing and purifying additives to laundry and surface cleaners throughout the home.
Essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be safely applied topically. Applying oils can have immediate benefit to the area of application. They have restorative and calming properties. They are also natural disinfectants.
Internal Uses
Many essential oils can also be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions, but some oils should not be taken internally. Do not use any essential oil product internally that does not have the appropriate dietary supplement facts on its label.
(In addition, essential oils should not be used in the eyes, inside the ear canal, or in open wounds. Consult your physician before using essential oils if you are pregnant or under a doctor's care.)
Where Can You Get Essential Oils?
Because of the growing popularity of these oils, they can be found in many stores and all over the internet. But you want to make sure you are getting quality oils...the two most important qualities are purity and potency. It needs to be absolutely pure and it needs to be potent.
Our family has recently discovered doTERRA Essential Oils which have built a reputation as some of the best quality essential oils out there. All of their oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® which means they guarantee all of their essential oil extracts are 100% pure and meet high standards for both purity and material composition.
Many of us have signed up as consultants simply to be able to buy their most popular packages at wholesale prices, but a few family members, including my sisters, are actively selling.
So I offer their contact information merely as a courtesy so that if you are interested in purchasing or just finding out more information...I know they can help you.

And finally....in honor of essential oils...I want to share a recipe I found from Frugally Sustainable that I think is BRILLIANT!
Rosemary and Lavender Calming Spray!
I am going to mix up a batch as soon as I find a mister bottle to put it in! (Or maybe I'll just douse my kids and myself with it!) :-)
-water
-20 drops rosemary essential oil
-20 drops lavender essential oil
Directions: Combine all ingredients in a 2 ounce mister/spray bottle. Spray whenever necessary for calming effect. Shelf stable, no need to refrigerate, and will last indefinitely.
I hope that some of this has been helpful to someone. I know I was completely CLUELESS about essential oils up until about 6 months ago (and to be honest, fairly skeptical). But it doesn't take too many times being helped out by them and you start becoming a believer.
A better understanding of essential oils and what they can do is today's.....
You just read my mind all the way from Florida. I was just looking for this info and where to buy quality oils. Love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteA friend who knows of my love affair with the essential essence oils from the Plant and Tree Kingdom alerted me to this post. LOVE that you are promoting this natural and delightful healing method. I want to echo your warning to use only high quality, medicinal/therapeutic grade oils. Lower quality essential oils may contain synthetics...adulteration is quite legal...which are counterproductive to the benefit to our bodies. Nature has provided a remedy for every medical or emotional issue we humans might encounter. My journey with plant medicine came out of necessity. As a recovering alcoholic, I needed to find non-pharmaceutical means to treat a variety of conditions. I have found Spike Lavender to be MORE effective for the treatment of migraine than the powerful pharmaceuticals I had over-used...with the oils, no unpleasant side effects, and hugely delightful side benefits.
ReplyDeleteHello, I love your blog! I've been slowly converting over to some of the homemade cleaning and beauty products a lot of which (as you mention) do call for essential oils. I just thought I would add this tidbit...I'm currently pregnant and it wasn't until about a week ago I heard some other pregnant women mention that some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy (yes, they're that potent folks - I had no idea)...putting a halt to my homemade remedies that call for essential oils. I'll guess I'll have to wait to get the 'smell good'/health benefits on. It appears that some of the essential oils I'll have even longer to wait on until as they are recommended only after I've finish nursing.
ReplyDeleteHere's the best list I could find on safe and not safe essential oils during pregnancy though abstaining from them altogether is generally recommended by your ob.

Re: Pregnancy and essential oils ie: doTERRA CTPG (Certified Therapeutic Pure Grade)
These oils are pure and yes, very potent. However, many oils can be very beneficial during pregnancy, our family is proof of that fact. Please ask questions, research your personal issues, there are many people/experts out there ready and willing to share their knowledge to help you live in wellness. Remember, essential oils are not a crazy trend, they are a gift of the earth that civilizations before us relied on for healing and well being. Kindly, R.
Thanks for the info...I love all your ideas.
ReplyDeleteI am a believer! They have been very helpful to me. I LOVE their special Vitamins!!! They give me so much needed energy. Good benifical information, Jillee.
ReplyDeleteThese oils have changed our lives! I have a child with ADHD, another child with Aspergers and the third one with OCD. These oils have made the biggest difference. Since we started using doTERRA we have not once gone to the doctor. We have been able to treat everything with the oils so far. If any of you have any children with ADD or ADHD and would like some help knowing which oils to use please let me know. It is a great alternative way to medicine. We have used the oils for stomach aches, indigestion, headaches, wounds, anxiety, depression, coughs, colds, fever, rashes, cancer sores. You name it there is an oil for it! Great post Jillee!
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear about what oils to use for adhd!! My email is carter75@ymail.com
DeleteI love essential oils and they're very easy to make. You should try it!
ReplyDeleteI also found doTerra oils about a year ago and have been using them for our family. I feel so blessed to have their use. My husband has suffered from frequent recurring sinus infections. Since we started using the oils he has only had the beginnings of one which we treated and averted a full scale infection. One almost sinus infection in a year for him is a huge blessing. We also take the supplements which I thinks helps tremendously. As others have mentioned, do the research. We decided to dive right in and get one of the bigger kits and a diffuser. I think that made all the difference for us. Do what you can as you can though because something is better than nothing!
ReplyDeleteResponding to Natasha...I know how debilitating migraine can be. I was a very frequent user of Imitrex, took a migraine prophylactic daily for years, and also had become addicted to the myriad of pain meds offered for migraine. I have replaced all pharmaceuticals with Spike Lavender, have far fewer migraine attacks, and the migraine threats no longer become a full-blown migraine.I specify Spike Lavender because, of all the Lavenders, that is the one most effective for specific migraine symptoms. I use Wisdom of the Earth brand (www.wisdomoftheearth.com) Wisdom of the Earth essences are the most powerful of the many brands I have experienced. The manner in which they are distilled and bottled preserves the highest possible vibration of the plant medicine; the higher the vibration, the more powerful the healing capabilities. I apply Spike Lavender to my eyebrows, temples, behind ears, scalp and bottoms of feet immediately upon any threat of migraine...and I keep applying until the symptoms subside. I rarely go beyond the visual symptoms and buzzing sound. Other oils effective for headache pain are Peppermint and Niauoli. Peppermint is a hot essence and so should not be applied to tender skin. Inhale it from the bottle, apply to bottoms of feet. I literally pour it onto my scalp at the back and sides of my head for a tension-type headache, which for me can be a precursor to migraine. Be sure to use medicinal grade oil. Any oil that contains a synthetic will actually make the headache worse. The lavender is also awesome as a sleep aid...or for just pure delight. Try a few drops in the bath if migraine is threatening. Because migraine must be addressed immediately upon notice of pre-symptoms, I carry Spike Lavender with me always. I can easily and discreetly apply it, and the fragrence is not offensive to others.
ReplyDeleteEven a pure essential oil can feel uncomfortable to sensitive skin sometimes. If you feel a burning sensation, even if it gets in your eyes, DO NOT USE WATER! Immediately apply organic olive oil! You will be amazed by how quickly the burning sensation subsides! More than once I have accidentally gotten essential oil in my eyes...some olive oil applied to a cotton ball and wiped across my eye...immediate relief. The olive oil is not harmful to my eyes. Water increases the burning sensation.
ReplyDeleteDori,
ReplyDeleteI would love to know what you use with a ADD/ADHD child. I see a lot of ADD tendencies in my 12 yr old daughter, but we can't afford a formal evaluation right now. I've been trying to do a lot of changes at home to see if it helps her. Thanks for your input!
-Jen
Hi Jen, I know how frustrating it can be for you and your daughter. I would love to talk with you more about what I use for my son. There is a combination of three oils that I use and layer them one by one. I also use the diffuser in the morning and after school. Can you go to the link about with my name and then send me your contact info or email me at www.doriwodell@gmail.com. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am a consultant for Essential Oils with another company, Young Living, and my family no longer uses convential medicine (drugs, chemicals, etc.) in our home. We even use the cleaning products from Young Living for our home. I could go on and on with all the beneifits we have seen from using YL Essential Oils; my daughter's Asperger's. My husband's skin spots, my pain from surgery, headaches, RLS, allergies, sore throat, and on and on. I even use them for losing weight and maintaining my weight. Any time you can do something natural, something that has been used for centuries, to aid in your body's health, is always better than putting chemicals/drugs into your body. And who wouldn't want to stay healthy without putting chemicals in their body? I love YL Essential Oils. They have literally changed my and my family's lives.
ReplyDeleteDori - quick question on the ADHD. I do not have this but I was diagnosed with Cataplexy 3 yrs ago. Since then I've basically fallen apart between the disease and the harsh meds. I've had a hysterectomy, dialysis, extensive oral surgery, and am on several supplements since I live off 1 to 2 hrs sleep and the meds absorbed all the calcium and iron in my body. They tried everything from stimulants, anti depressants, xyrem (GHB).... The only thing that seems to help are the meds for ADHD specifically Adderal. I'd like to be med free! Any info on what helps for your kids would be extremely helpful and definitely worth a try!! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteRosemary,
ReplyDeleteLet me start some research into this for you. Can you email me at doriwodell@gmail.com so I can get this information to you? Thank you! I will also respond on here what I find so it can help anyone.
Rosemary, I did a post on my blog today, the link is up above. The blog post is what I do for my kids and their ADD/ADHD. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteFor anyone who is dealing with ADHA, please read "What's Eating Your Child" and research Fish Oil/Omega 3 oils in treating this issue. Seriously! I have been amazed!
ReplyDeleteI started reading your post with hesitation. I've been using essential oils for years but it wasn't until a year ago and a half ago that I started using them medicinally. I was happy to see you recommend doTERRA essential oils. There's no comparison as to the quality and purity. I use them for my allergies and I'm so glad that I can use something that isn't going to harm my body any more. Kudos for talking about doTERRA. <3
ReplyDeleteI'm an IPC for doTERRA too! It's amazing what our bodies can do with oils. :) Thanks for posting this today!
ReplyDelete@ Jess~ I would love to hear more about how you use them for your allergies. I have a teenage son that gets seasonal (spring) allergies and they are getting to him bad this Spring. I prefer to do things naturally but the honey does not seem to be making a differance this year. Thanks for your help. Beth
