Anonymous said...This sounds great, I'm going to try it next time I get groceries.....Do you have a recipe to use for cleaning the dishwasher itself? Mine is VERY old and well, yucky. Anything I can use to sparkle it up a bit without hurting my back climbing inside the machine? lol

After reading this my initial reaction was....Washing the Washer? Cleaning the Cleaner? Was this really necessary?
I gave it some thought and even did some research on it...but sort of shuffled it to the bottom of the "To Do" List because it wasn't something I had had to deal with...yet....since our dishwasher is less than a year old.
Well, SOMEONE must have thought I had put it off long enough....because yesterday when I opened my dishwasher, this is what I found!
A whole lot of dirty dish water standing in the bottom of it. ugh. Not good. That will teach me to procrastinate!
It was the middle of the day with no hubster around to consult with...so I decided it was the PERFECT time to re-visit my research into How To Clean Your Dishwasher....which really seems like an odd thing to even type when you think about it....CLEAN your DishWASHER?? Sounds mixed up to me! I mean the thing is running what seems like 24 hours a day...how can it get DIRTY??? Well, it turns out there are LOTS of ways it can get gunk and junk in it that need to be cleaned. Tiny bits of food, grease and soap scum can cling together and get deposited in corners of the dishwasher. After a time, they can not only make your dishwasher look and smell bad...but decrease its' efficiency.
Well I knew it was only a matter of time before my dishwasher started to smell bad if I didn't find a way to get rid of the standing water in the bottom. All the articles I read on this subject (and there were many!) all boiled down to basically 3 (sometimes 4) easy steps.
FiRST....pull the bottom rack out and examine the drain area and make sure there are no hard chunks that can plug the drain, cause damage to the pump or scratch dishes. You'd be surprised at what dishwasher repairmen find - bones, crab shells, chips of glass, and even small pieces of gravel!
So I got down on my knees and stuck my head in there and lo and behold I DID find a "hard chunk" plugging the drain............
Yep, that's a hard chunk alright. :-/ I swear folks! That is the first time I have EVER had that happen!! I have found the occasional utensil fallen down there....but never something like this. I was actually quite horrified when I saw it! I thought my dishwasher MUST be a goner! But I figured I'd come this far...I wasn't stopping now. So I pulled up my "big girl panties" and continued the task at hand.
Now that I had discovered the "chunk"...I felt all around the drain to make sure there were no MORE chunks hiding. Couldn't find a single piece of anything. So I proceeded to the next step.
SeCOND.....Place a dishwasher-safe cup filled with plain white vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher. Using the hottest water available, run the dishwasher through a cycle - except for the cup of vinegar, the dishwasher needs to be empty.
The vinegar will help to wash away the loose, greasy grime, sanitizes, and helps remove the musty odor.
If you don't have any white vinegar, you may substitute a packet of unsweetened lemonade mix in the soap cup. Don't experiment with other flavors as they may stain the inside of your dishwasher.
ThIRD.....After using the vinegar to sanitize the inside of the dishwasher, sprinkle a cupful of baking soda around the bottom of the tub and run it through a short but complete cycle using the hottest water. The baking soda will help freshen the smell of the dishwasher as well as brighten up the look of the inside of your appliance by removing stains.
(OPTIONAL):
If you have problems with mold and mildew, add ½-1 cup bleach in the bottom of the dishwasher and run a full cycle. NOTE: DO NOT USE BLEACH IN YOUR DISHWASHER IF YOU HAVE A STAINLESS STEEL INTERIOR).
So.....did it work??? Sure did! My dishwasher is now squeaky clean and fresh smelling and NO standing water! Let's hear it for no dishwasher repair bill!!!
Now that the dishwasher is clean and running right.........here are a few IMPORTANT tips to KEEP it that way....until the next cleaning. (A routine dishwasher cleaning is a good habit to get into. And you have to admit...now that you know how it's done...it's not that hard.)
*Run the garbage disposal before starting the dishwasher. The dishwasher drains into the same pipe as your sink, so that drain must be clear.
*Run a bit of hot water in your sink before running the dishwasher. You will get cleaner dishes if the water starts hot. You can collect the water you run and use it for watering plants or other purposes. Run the water until what comes out of the tap feels hot.
*Make sure your water starts hot enough. Set the thermostat on your water heater to 120F (50C). Water that is cooler than this won't do a good job cleaning. Water that is hotter could scald.
*Run full loads to conserve water and energy, but don't pack dishes too tightly. Dishwashers wash dishes by spraying water over them, so the water needs to be able to get to the dishes to clean them.
*If you are inclined to pre-wash your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher, consider this. Dishwasher detergent NEEDS a certain amount of grease and dirt in order to do its job. Otherwise, it actually foams up during the cycle which is not good for your dishwasher.
Now Go Forth And Clean!!! :-)
Cleaning the appliance that cleans our dishes so that everything STAYS clean is today's.....

Perfect timing for me to read this as my dishwasher is gucky. Thanks for these tips. I am sure in a few short hours my dishwasher will also be sparkling clean!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips! Do you have any ideas for how to clean the inside of a clothes dryer? I've got blue all on the inside (probably from jeans)
ReplyDeleteGood job, Jillee. All of these years I have had a dishwasher, I never knew what I have learned from you today. Just goes to show that you can learn something valuable every single day, if you have someone like you around to teach you. I am so proud of the way you so willingly help others to make their lives easier.
ReplyDeleteYou've got to be reading my mind!! I literally looked this up last week.. THESE EXACT STEPS! I'm making a cleaning binder, with directions for all of my all-natural cleaners, and steps to clean everything I can think of! I don 't want to forget all the AWESOME, easy steps I've learned to clean practically anything!
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog. I discovered it through Pinterest! I just read another blog (that I read often like yours) about cleaning the dishwasher and thought I would share!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.imperfecthomemaking.com/2012/02/how-to-clean-your-dishwasher-without.html
Thanks for all your advice! I never know how to take care of all my household chores and you make it easier and fun (well as fun as it can be!)
Good Lord! I just get used to using vinegar and now you want this?
ReplyDeleteDo I look like Fannie Farmer?????
Thank you for posting this. I was actually getting on your site to look for the homemade dishwasher soap, because mine was ugly & dirty and I didn't want to waste more detergent. Perfect timing!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Wow, I never thought about doing that because there is soap in mine everyday but I am going to try that tonight!
ReplyDeleteWe have hard water and if the salt runs even a little low rust in the water stains the interior of the dishwasher something fierce! I'll try this method the next time and see how it works. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOh do I need to do this soon! My dear dishwasher has seen it's better days, but I am sure this needs to be done!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jill, as always you are the best!
WOW love love the idea. This will come in handy where I work, as there are 24 dishwashers that are in need of a good cleaning.
ReplyDeleteAs for the question asked about the inside of the dryer turning blue. We take a white towel that has bleach on it and it takes the blue right off. Been doing this for 4 years now and the dryers are always white when done.
Diana,
ReplyDeleteHave you tried rubbing alcohol? That should work. =+) Good Luck
Dear Jill: I am offically hooked on your blog :) I have already made my own laundry detergent and love all the great things you share with us everyday! Keep those great things coming...one good thing at a time.
ReplyDeleteYes DerFarm...I do expect you to try it. :-)
ReplyDelete24 dishwashers????? Wow! You DO need this. :-) Great suggestion about the white towel with bleach on it. thanks!
Karen...thank you! I have determined that One Good Thing By Jillee is an acceptable addiction. ;-)
This idea works great in microwaves too! Just put some vinegar in a cup and turn microwave on for 2 or 3 minutes. Take a clean cloth and wipe it out. For stuck on food, use a little baking soda and water and wipe clean.
ReplyDeleteput a package of lemonade Koolaid in your dishwasher. it works wonders and no scrubbing.
ReplyDeleteWow! I never thought it would be awesome to do that!
ReplyDeleteone thing to also do, is after you run the chemicals through, run it totally empty. I ran an appliance service center, and that's how we told our customer to do it for years. If you are one to wash dishes first, look at your glasses, that cloudiness around the edges, is the soap etching them. As for loading, I try and tell people to think of it as your shower, if it's not getting a direct spray it can't clean (those handy shelves on the top rack that people put cups below and utensils on top, which one is blocking the other?)
ReplyDeleteI love the ideas! Good for you, and me too! This is definitely a blog I want to continue to follow.
ReplyDeleteMake sure you note...
ReplyDeleteDo NOT mix vinegar and Clorax!!!
So do you allow the cup of vinegar to sit on the top rack while running or do you empty it first?
ReplyDeleteFab post thank you so much, I also use white vinegar to descale my kettle I fill it 1/3 with white vinegar and 1/3 water and boil the kettle, rinse, fill with water boil, rinse do this at least 3 times before using your kettle for tea or coffee.
ReplyDeletelikestocook...thank you! Good advice from someone in the appliance biz! :-)
ReplyDeleteAnony....I placed the cup of vinegar on the top rack then turned on the machine. :-)
Lemi Shine added to each cycle does wonders for keeping it clean too! Watch out though, I had the nasty water backing up thing too and it would go away with cleaning or even when each cycle was run but then come back. Turns out we needed a valve replaced.......my dishwasher is soooo clean from the many attempts to "flush out the drain" though ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly what I needed. I have to do this over the weekend.
ReplyDeleteIs it sad that I'm over the top excited to have this on my to-do list for the weekend? You can be honest. I'm strong enough to handle it.
Thanks for sharing!!!
Sounds like a great idea for the dishwasher, which I am going to try tonight. However, do you have any suggestions for the clothes washer?
ReplyDeleteGreat Post! My appliance repairman had told me clorox then run it empty. But your steps sound more thorough.
ReplyDeleteMy new washer came with a sample of stuff to wash it. I'm surprised the companies haven't come out with stuff to wash the dishwashers!
Thanks,
Carrie
You also want to pull your drain screen and clean it. It will have dog hair, bits of food, lint, etc. in it. I was surprised to find the dog hair...guess it was on some of the dirty dishes that have gone in. I do this about every 3 months. Will add the vinegar cycle next time too.
ReplyDeleteSorry if this has already been addressed here, as I did not get thru all the comments, but wanted to say:
ReplyDeleteDO NOT use bleach on mold or mildew!!! It will make it temporarily look better, but it actually spreads the mold & mildew spores!!! Rather than inhibit the growth it makes it grow!!
The vinegar that you used will kill it. Now MAYBE LATER AFTER you know the mold/mildew has died, you could use bleach to "bleach" the area, and make it look better. I personally keep bleach away for mold & mildew as much as possible! I would at least be sure it has actually died before using bleach!
We use TANG (yes, the juice powder drink mix) to clean our dishwasher. Literally, cleans out all the water lines perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to do this right now! What a great day to read this- on my day off!
ReplyDeleteI did this last night to my dishwasher and it worked WONDERS! I was noticing my dishes weren't getting as clean as they used to and, since I hadn't changed my detergent or rinse aid, I figured I should try cleaning it. Definitely did the trick! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDid I overlook it? Remember to take the utinsil tray off the door of the dishwasher to get the dishwasher really clean.
ReplyDeleteI have soap building up on my dishwasher door, this is a perfect idea! I use my dishwasher to clean the fabric dispenser for my washer as well and it works great! When cleaning a washing machine I just run a load like normal but with the lid open and a flat head screw driver in the lid switch to allow it to run the complete cycle, "I purchased a new toilet bowl scrub brush and basically hold it in the problem area on the tub as it spins! No stain can hold up against that! Also save old toothbrushes for some hard to reach places!
ReplyDeleteIve been using vinegar for years--hard water--sometimes I just put in a cup full right in bottom of dishwasher when I start it..Dishes come out clean no soap scum and dishwasher is clean!!
ReplyDeleteWe have super hard water. We have to clean our dishwasher every 2-4 months or lime scale builds up on the heating elements. You should have seen the old dishwasher when we moved in! The whole thing, even the rack was covered in lime. It took 4 treatments of store bought stuff to get rid of it. It's called dishwasher magic (if anyone cares). but I like your way better, so much cheaper! I just hope that cup of vinegar is up to the task of lime.
ReplyDeleteI take a spray bottle and fresh lemon juice. Do it with the dishes in there and they will clean any darkness on your dishes also. No chemicals so completely safe.
ReplyDeletewhere is the drain in the dishwasher and what is under the little round thing in the front left hand corner of my dishwasher. Your picture has it too. and the "screen" someone addressed to clean where is that?
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLemishine is wonderful for hard water. It worked for us when vinegar, lemon kool aid and citric acid would not (all are acidic based). Also, I've found that if I use the "gel" packets of dish detergent rather than the tablets, I always have issues.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips:) I always use CLR - pour it in and run it on a super hot setting. I love that stuff. We have hard water and after awhile my glasses and dishes end up looking dingy - so I fill my sink with hot water and a little CLR and put the stuff in for a little bit and rinse in cold water and they come out shiney clean like new again!
ReplyDeleteI am going to try this for sure!
ReplyDeleteBeware when you go to buy a new dishwasher...My daughter recently bought a new one and it is a piece of crap...it is so "flimsly" the bottom rack won't stop when you pull it out..you forget and wham you've pulled itout on the floor...it is nothing like her other one...I have learned to check a few things out if and when I have to replce mine...lots of good tips on the site..keep them coming..thanks NLA
ReplyDeleteVinegar is for sure...the cure
ReplyDeleteI just found in my dishwasher MANUAL it says to occasionally place 8 ounces of white vinegar in a glass and place in lower rack, and then run a Normal Cycle. This is for odor, but I found it did clean my machine and get the hard white stains and hard water stains out. It works well!
ReplyDeleteIf you have removable filters also wash those in hot soapy water as I find they build up a film on them.

ReplyDeleteI have very hard water, so I use about a 1/2 cup of vinegar in every load (I just keep a measuring cup sitting on the top rack and fill it every time I run the dishwasher) to keep the spots and film away. It works wonders---no rinse aid needed!
ReplyDeleteYou can also use Lemon CoolAide too...that works great...
ReplyDeleteThere is a Dishwasher cleaner you can buy at the grocery store. I think its called Dishwasher Magic...?? I live where the water is harder than a rock so that kind of power is necessary. But the vinegar would probably work if your water is normal.
ReplyDeleteany ideas on a front load washer? Ours has a nappy smell ...
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic idea! I'm going to use it on my (older) model dishwasher tonight. Can't wait to see how it turns out. :)
ReplyDeleteDiana. I recently had black crayon all over the inside of my dryer and to my surprise, I got it all out by using a product called LA's Totally Awesome. I ran the dryer for 5 mins and sprayed it down and wiped ur out. It even got the crayon out of the clothes as well!!!! It only cost 1 dollar from Dollar General.
ReplyDeleteto the comment about the front load washer...check your instruction manual, ours had a combination of buttons to push that prompted a "cleaning" option, then I poured one cup of bleach (scented and MUCH cheaper than the Tide washing machine cleaner!) where the detergent usually goes and ran it on the clean cycle! No more yucky smell or grimy front rubber part :) YAY!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this! I will do mine this weekend.
ReplyDeleteFor washing machines, I heard on Dr. Oz to just run bleach with no clothes. I've done that and it cleans it nice. I then wash whites after just in case there's some bleach left.
Instead of drink mix, I went right to the main ingredient which is citric acid. I bought some bulk citric acid (also called "sour salt" (used in canning) and put a scant tablespoon in the detergent part. It will clean and degunk your dishwasher beautifully. I have a stainless steel dishwasher on the farm (iron and hard water) and it looks like the day I bought it. Only costs pennies.
ReplyDeleteI tried this today and when I opened my dishwasher the measuring cup still had vinegar and the water... am I missing something? Is that what is supposed to happen? I figured that the vinegar would empty somehow. I also still had soap residue on the door.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds great, but I have always tried a cup of bleach along with a cup of vinegar poured in bottom- let it run through a full cycle and voila it smells clean and is clean.
ReplyDeleteOur 1st house had HARD water that stained our dishwasher brown. We tried everything to clean it. Someone told us to run a cycle w/ Tang ... you know, what the astronauts drink... through it. We did and it was as white as the day we bought it :) vickie
ReplyDeleteThis does work, have done it several times. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so awesome!! I tried it tonight and loved how it cleaned my dishwasher!!! It works wonders and you can really see the difference if you have a dishwasher that is stainless steal inside!!! Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteI use vinegar as my rinse aid.
ReplyDeleteWe bought a year-old Kitchenaid stainless steel (Not Cheap!), couldn't get the cloudy film off the inside and I wasn't impressed with the performance. I found a detergent online with phosphate last month, bought a bag - it's fantastic! Won't name it, you'll find it.
ReplyDeleteFabulous! Now all of my "cleaning machines" are clean! I followed your directions for my HE washing machine last weekend and my machine smells so much better! Last night it was my dishwasher's turn. I did it s little different though. I started with the lemon Kool Aid and them followed up with the vinegar wash. Can't do the bleach as it's stainless steel. Awoke this morning to a refreshed and clean machine! Yay!
ReplyDeletejILLEE THE OTHER THING i Have found that helps is runa cup of vinegar through with your dishes once in a while it does double duty is good for the washer for cleaning it out and helps the glasses sparkle. been doing this forever and my mom found out when I moved how much my "weird" solutions actually helped when her washer went out and all the stuff they tried did not work as well
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that you run the dishwasher through all cycles including the drying cycle when using the cup of vinegar? I guess it can't hurt anything. Thanks for this great tip. Getting ready to unload my dishes and give it a try.
ReplyDeleteThey say,
ReplyDeleteyou can't teach an old dog new tricks, but I'd rather think, "you never get too old to learn" because I'm learning from your blog every day!!
bcrepps
Great information - vinegar is also great for cleaning bathrooms and multiple other things. Also cheap!
ReplyDeletebcrepps....I agree completely! :-))) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAnony.....sometimes I wonder what I did before I discovered the many many uses of vinegar! :-)
I need a good recipe or product that will really clean the toilet. (It gets a ring at the water line and mold like residue under the top edge.) This happens in both bathrooms and both are used several times each day. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI am going to do this today! Thank you MUCH!
ReplyDeleteMy dishwasher has rust from well water. Wonder if it will work on that?

Will lemon juice work in place of the vinegar or lemon kool-aid?
ReplyDelete
