Tub and Shower Soap Scum Buster

I have found some pretty amazing homemade cleaning products over the last year....and just when I think there can't possibly be any more that I haven't already heard of...I find something new! But more than finding something NEW...finding something that works as good or BETTER than any of the expensive name brand products is the icing on the cake!

Well Pinterest...you've done it again. Like I said, I see a LOT of homemade cleaning solutions in my online travels, but few make me stand up and take notice like this one did. My friend Julia (a recent Pinterest inductee/addict) posted it a few days ago and pretty much raved about it! And then today I've seen it pinned at least 2 or 3 more times!

As seen on Pinterest.com

So today I decided to mix up a batch (which is to say I added equal parts of two ingredients to an empty bottle...very tricky stuff!) and decided to give it a test drive.

It hadn't occurred to me until today that I really didn't have anything like it in my cleaning bag of tricks. I've used my "Miracle Cleaner" in the bathroom before, but it's more effective on localized grime and gunk. Can't really spray it on the whole tub or shower. I've also used my new AMAZING microfiber cleaning cloths to wipe down counter tops, sinks and mirrors with great success! But I really hadn't found a spray that I could use on soap scum in my shower and bath.

I guess I really hadn't thought much about it because we don't have a big problem with it in my shower (since *I* use it, I'm more conscientious about wiping it down between showers.) But my boys bathtub/shower combo is another story! It had this dull layer of soap scum that nothing I tried got through.

Fortunately, soap scum on an off-white bathtub/shower enclosure isn't very noticeable. UNfortunately, that is the same reason it's hard to show in a photo. So here are a few "before" pictures that don't really do the problem justice. Although the hardware does look pretty bad. If I had to explain it I would have to say it was lacking the shine or brightness that it originally had, and when you ran your fingers over it...it wasn't smooth like is should be. There was scum, even if it was hard to see.

So I decided to give "Tub and Shower Magic" by Bobbin at Food.com a try:

You will need:
  • a 24 oz spray bottle
  • 12 ounces of Dawn dishwashing liquid
  • 12 ounces of white vinegar
That's it!  Heat the vinegar in microwave until hot and pour into squirt bottle. Then add the Dawn soap. Put the lid on and gently shake to mix.

Easy enough. Now time to get to work.  I might have got a little carried away...because I ended up using the whole bottle! lol.  That's my addictive personality at work...."Oh, a little works??  Then a whole LOT must work even BETTER!"  Doesn't usually work out that way....BUT luckily in this case it turned out just fine.  (Even though it did look like some sort of nuclear accident had taken place!)

I ended up letting it sit for about an hour while I finished up some stuff...then I decided just to combine my morning shower with the scrubbing portion of this experiment. Sorry. No pictures are available. lol.

A few thoughts about this "magical" stuff:  it works! It definitely "ate through" the stubborn soap scum that was pretty much all over the enclosure. NOW when I rub my fingers over the surface, it's once again smoooooth and clean feeling. And in these "after" pictures...you can actually see the restored SHINE.

A couple of words of caution however.  It is STRONG smelling!! Since I was using it in a fairly confined space with no window....and I used A LOT of it....I had to actually leave the bathroom a couple of times to get some "fresh air" (in the hallway).  Once I was done with the SPRAYING...I was fine. I even took a shower in the stuff and had no ill effects. I think it's just when it was airborne that it got to me.

Also, it is VERY soapy/sudsy!! I think next time I find the need to mix up a batch I will cut back on the soap and replace with vinegar.  Maybe a 2 to 1 ratio rather than a 1 to 1 ratio. The extra soapiness wasn't really a problem except that it took a good deal of rinsing to get it all off.

So, there you go. My LONG-WINDED review of the homemade tub and shower soap scum buster that seems to have lots of people talking (at least on Pinterest) lately. Hopefully someone will find something helpful in all of that! ;-)

Stubborn soap scum busting is today's.....

  1. I have been using this recipe for a good month or so now, and I wouldnt confine it to just the bathroom. It cleans everything, I even used it to clean my iron, sprayed it on while the iron was hot, used a non scratch scourer and whala :) beautifully and easily cleaned iron. Brings stainless steel up like new as well :) I love it!!!

  2. I tried this a couple weeks ago, but didn't have dawn, so I used palmolive. I did the 1:1 ratio, and found it was very sudsy also. I was concerned someone would fall, as I also sprayed the shower floor with it. It worked great, but I ended up adding THREE more units of the vinegar to the mix, and I cleaned the bathroom sink with the final mix and it worked GREAT. I thought maybe it was because I used palmolive, and maybe it was more concentrated. I have not tried the dawn mix yet, but I LOVE it. I didn't think the mix smelled bad though. I thought it smelled GOOD! :-) I also tried the foaming hand cleaner recipe. Have you? If you have a foaming pump hand cleaning bottle, it is ONE tablespoon Dawn, and then fill the rest of the bottle up with water, leaving just a little bit of room at the top. It works!!!! I LOVE Pinterst!!! Have a great day!

  4. I keep seeing this on Pinterest. I think now maybe I will try it, blog about it, and love it just the same!! Thanks!!

  5. Jillee, do you think maybe the sudsy issue had anything to do with putting on 24z all at once? Maybe if you were doing this on a fairly regular basis so that it wasn't so built up, just enough to get it wet would do the job, and the sudsy issue wouldn't be. Did you do any scrubbing at all? If so, did you use the mf or a scrubbie? When I use Scrubbing Bubbles, I find that it works better when I use it while the shower is still wet, and if it's not, use a REALLY wet cloth to wipe it down. Wonder if that would factor in with this new recipe? Have you noticed yet that the acid test of whether or not it's CLEAN happens when you run that mf cloth over the area - if it feels perfectly slick, it's clean, and if you feel any drag whatsoever, that's a place that still needs some work. Helps when you can't see that soap scum, especially where it accumulates the heaviest under the shower head and along the bottoms of the walls.

  6. Wonderful! I'll try this recipe for sure.

Now, if only you'd tell me how to replace my caulking so it won't peel off so easily!

  7. I made this a few weeks ago after seeing it at Pinterest. I have used it on my oven after I had 'cleaned' it via self-cleaning option. There were stains on the glass door and around edges that did not come off with the oven self-cleaning option. I was able to direct the spray right where needed, let it sit and then wipe it down. The results are amazing. It works equally well on stainless steel pots and pans for stubborn burned on stains. Used in BR shower and tub combo with great results.
    This stuff works!

  8. I saw this on Pinterest and used it last weekend, it's absolutely the best hands down! I cleaned my all of my bathrooms with it. I just put scented candles in the bathrooms after I finished cleaning.

  9. Oh Oh Ohhhh...cannot wait to try this!

  10. I just made this also but noticed when I sprayed it in my shower it wasn't as blue as your pictures is that because you used to much or did I do something wrong?

  11. Tried this a couple of weeks ago...It's great!!!

  12. I wonder how this would work on a shower curtain? We have a clear one, and every month, take it down, run it through the washer with washcloths, vinegar and soap and go hang it up again. It's a pain! Well, I guess I'll just have to try it!

    ReplyDelete
  13. HAS ANYONE TRIED TO MAKE IT WITH THE HOME MADE DISHWASHING LIQUID INSTEAD OF DAWN?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ugggh, you just had to remind me of that awful soap scum in my shower, didn't you? Oh, well, I guess I've been putting it off long enough! I'll be giving this a try.

  15. Hi Jill! I'm definitely going to try this!! I have to say, I've always been a fan of cleaning-it's such a stress reliever for me!-but you make it even more fun! I love trying out all your finds. Are you enjoying not working?

  20. Wow! Have I ever enjoyed your blog today! I will be stopping to pick up some spray bottles on my way home from work, and will be trying most of your cleaner recipes this week. I can hardly wait! Thanks so much. Not only do you provide a go-to place for home made cleaners that really work (I hope), but it is so entertaining to read through your posts! Who would have thought blogs about cleaning could make a person laugh?? Thanks for such good and fun info!!

  23. Does anyone know any natural ways to get rust stains out of the bathtub, sink and white clothes? I have tried "Iron Out", but it doesn't take it all out and I am too sensitive to the smell.

  25. to Sandy aka Doris the Great, I found out the hard way that there are different kinds of caulking. Latex kind doesn't work around water. You have to find one for bathrooms.

  26. Thank you! I love your blog - please keep finding up great, non-toxic, cheap solutions for everything. You are a gem!
I used mostly vinegar and a small amount of Dawn and it worked perfectly. And I had a lot of thick soap scum and it is all gone. So we can back way off the dish detergent, not much is needed.

  27. I live in a house that is twice my age and still has the original bathtub. While its great for its size, its not sealed and very pourus (sp) which never really comes clean. Magic erasers, bleach like toilet bowl cleaner, Shark steam cleaner...... u name it I have tried it. The toilet bowl cleaner has actually given my bathtub a zebra stripe effect. Relaxing baths just dont happen in my house! I am so excited to try this concoction that I will be headed to get more vinegar and Dawn now! I will keep ya posted on the results!
****For the record I am not a dirty person, I just dont have 2+ hours to spend solely on my bathtub every week!

  28. carol....so far a "cure" for mildew has eluded me. I will redouble my efforts!! I know there has to be a non-toxic answer out there! (I'm pretty sure one of the amazing readers of this blog will know as well!)

  29. Hey Jill! We have a lot of calcium in our water, and therefore it has built up in our toilet. It looks nasty and is very emberasing!! Have you came up with or know of a recipe to help remove this. I have tried a pumice stone, but it doesn't work (too much build up I suppose) thanks!! Tanika

  30. I also had tried this mixture and it was very sudsey, and like you I also used the whole bottle first try (lol) so the next time i cut the dawn down to 6 oz and it was way better . I also use it to clean sink and toilet and it works great. Keep up the awesome work.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I've tried this - it really works. My shower is just like Jill's, one of those fiberglass molded ones - but mine was WAY dirtier than hers. We live in a high mold area...I don't even want to go into it. Let's just say, I won't be posting photographic evidence of this recipe's efficacy.

Anyway - try it, you won't be disappointed.

  32. I've used the white vinegar by itself to clean my showers for years. What is the benefit of adding dawn, other than the blue hue and bubbles it provides? And yes, the smell is quiet strong.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If you have leftover mixture does it have to be reheated to work?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love the idea of cleaning with something more natural like vinegar but ewww the smell! Any ideas on how to make the smell less yucky?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I also would like to know if this must be warm to work, or can you make it ahead of time and use later?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Do you know if this can be used on a ceramic or porcelain tile shower? I just don't want to mess up the grout. Also, does it have to be warm or can you just save the unused portion to use later?

    ReplyDelete
  37. How can you justify putting THIS MUCH SOAP on soap scum??!! Dawn detergent is super concentrated and this is just a TREMENDOUS amount of soap. Seems to me like you would be defeating the purpose(??) You must have to use a lot of water to rinse the soap off of the soap. Would love to try this, but it just seems odd to me!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Carol, for your mildew, try this mixture: 1 cup ammonia, 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 gallon water. Scrub in and rinse it well...

    ReplyDelete
  39. I remembered reading this, but was too lazy to come back and re-read it for the exact recipe. So I grabbed my 50/50 water vinegar bottle, put in a few tablespoons of Dawn, and gave it a little shake. Then I attacked what I was pretty sure was a fairly clean tub and shower. Oh....my. The grime. It melted off like magic. So, no, you don't need a ton of Dawn, and it doesn't need to be hot. Just spray it on fairly heavily, let it sit for a few minutes, grab your scrubby pad and watch that nice coating of ick come right off. Then do it again because after you rinse, you'll be able to see the spots you missed. And I've never seen my fixtures shine like that!

  40. another great way to get rid of soap scum is by using a dryer sheet-- get it wet and wipe away! works like magic, too-- and not as many suds.

thanks for all the good info!

  41. I tried it with 1/4 Dawn to 3/4 vinegar, not heated, and it worked pretty well. I think the heat must help the vinegar to dissolve the Dawn so they can blend. AND I think the Dawn helps thicken the vinegar to help it CLING to the shower walls so it can stay long enought to eat through that soap scum. Marcia

    ReplyDelete
  42. Marcia...thank you. I think you are exactly right about the Dawn helping the vinegar CLING. Sometimes the most obvious things escape me. :-)

leisel...one of these days I'm going to have to break down and buy some dryer sheets (since I don't use them anymore) just to see what they can do on soap scum! :-) thanks!

  43. Thanks, everyone.... for the idea and comments.... I feel inspired...this is how I am gonna spend my afternoon. Maybe it won't take as long as I had thought, Last weekend I used the expensive store bought stuff, that didn't get the job done. Appears I need to get familiar with Pinterest. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  44. Just a heads up. I just used this on my new ceramic tile shower. While it devoured the soap scum that was built up, it also turned my white grout a blueish shade. Not sure if less Dawn would remedy that or not, but I'm a little bummed...

    ReplyDelete
  45. Has anyone tried this w/o Dawn brand? I try to only use eco-friendly products and was wondering if you could do this with and eco-friendly dish soap? I might try just a small amount to test.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I tried this today and all I can say is "OMG this works wonderful". I have an old bath tub and it has always been so hard to clean. My husband is a welder and all that oil off him sticks to the tub like glue. I sprayed this on the shower walls and the tub, sprayed pretty heavy. Let it set for 30 to 45 minutes then rinsed. I couldn't believe the difference!! I didn't realise how bad the shower walls were. Everything didn't come off so I sprayed it again. Let set for another 30 minutes. Rinsed. I was so shocked!! Even using Comet and scrubbing like crazy NEVER got my tub this clean. And I didn't even have to scrub. As soon as I was finished I called my Mom to pass on this wonderful concoction. Thanks so much!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I forgot to add that I used 8 oz of Dawn and 16 oz of vinegar. But the smell was just too strong. Next time I will do 1/2 and 1/2. I did not have the problem with all the suds like some of the comments.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Deanna...I'm sorry...I would be bummed too. :-( Have you considered trying a Bleach pen on the bluish grout?

Melissa....it's hard to argue with results like that! some people don't like all the soap...but it sure did the trick on the soap scum I knew was there...and even the stuff I didn't know was there! Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Do you have to use the Blue Dawn soap? Couldn't you buy the clear version? I've read posts on the dreaded blue grout lines too... I wonder if there is a difference in the soaps?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Also... I wonder how a diluted version would work? Like 1 part dawn, 1 part vinegar, and 1 part water? Maybe that would reduce the vinegar smell?

    ReplyDelete
  51. In your ingredients list you do list water but you don't use it in the instructions. But by reading I take it you are suppose to. But like one woman said...she doubled the vinegar and left out the water. I would think this would be better as the water only dilutes the chemicals that are working. I would say that it would not matter what color dishsoap you use but do reccomend a better brand because it is thicker and will make the mixture stick better. My fiberglass tub and surround could really use this I have tried lots of things to clean it and only found one thing that worked but very exensive to use. Undiluted Head and Shoulders will do the same thing but takes a full bottle.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well I made some last night, and I LOVE it!! But you really only need 3 parts vinegar and 1 part dish soap, it's very thick being half and half. I bought a bottle of Polmolive "clean&clear" instead of the Dawn. It's all natural and 'clear' lol... no tinted grout lines... has a slight apple smell. It's wonderful! :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thanks for all the comments suggestions. I think I'm definitely going to try more vinegar and less soap next time...and good suggestion on getting a "clear" dish soap for those worried about discolored grout.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I just did this last night and used 1 cup of 50/50 vinegar/water mixture to about 1 tablespoon of Dawn. After sitting for about 30 minutes I jumped in the shower with a wash cloth and a small scrub brush. I used the washcloth on the walls and the scrub brush on the hard to clean corners and dirty grout areas. It worked great! I didn't even realize that my shower walls were dirty, but now they are sparkly and clean. It even worked on my clear shower curtain. It had a very powerful smell and I ended up using a bandana to cover my mouth and nose while I sprayed it and for the first part of the rinsing off process. I do think that a clear version of dish soap would help if you are concerned about staining, but my old apartment shower didn't soak up any blue tint.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Just did the 50/50 Dawn/vinegar trick in my tub area as well DH's shower stall and am overall quite pleased. I followed up with a 50/50 vinegar/water solution to rinse off the walls and cut the remaining soap film. HOWEVER ... the shower stall with it's non-slip textured floor still had some areas that weren't completely soap-scum-free. Might I add that shower floor has been the worst thing to clean EVER. I resorted to my "new-found-when-all-else-fails-start-dumping-anything-into-the-shower cleaner" and it did the trick! Yup - Suave Daily Clarifying shampoo saved the day again. Can't imagine what it does to your hair, but it's one heckuva soap scum cutter. Next time I'm going to substitute the Suave for the Dawn and I'm imagining truly amazing results. I'll let you know how it goes!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I haven't tried this yet, but I was reading the comments and I wonder, for those who have a really hard time with it sudsing too much a hard time rinsing it, are they using regular Dawn or an "ultra Dawn"?

    ReplyDelete
  57. As for those who can't stand the vinegar smell, maybe try adding some vanilla to it? I know painters suggest that for those who can't stand paint fumes. Maybe that would work or an essential oil.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Anyone know if this is safe to use on travertine (stone)?

    ReplyDelete
  59. The floor of my shower has little nooks and crannies where dirt accumulates. I've tried, with no success, scrubbing it with Tilex or Clorox. One day I was using V05 conditioner (cheap kind you find at dollar store) and a bit of conditioner fell on the floor. When my shower was over I noticed a white spot amongst the embedded dirt and I thought, no, could it be? Next day I poured some of the conditioner on the embedded dirt, waited a few minutes, then took it off with a scrubrush. Worked like a charm! I don't know if all conditioners work this way but I'm guessing that they do. Why it works, I have no clue but I'm glad I found a solution to this frustrating cleaning issue. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  60. I made this last week and have cleaned my shower with it twice because I love it so much! I rarely measure anything though. I used a large spray bottle and only put enough Dawn to cover the bottom, then topped the rest of the bottle with vinegar.

I have a white tiled shower and it did not stain the tile or the grout blue. I also only let it sit for about 15 minutes and used a scrub brush to finish up, so it did not sit on it for too long. So, just use the Dawn in moderation and make sure to rinse well and you should be fine!

  61. Can't wait to try this! Have been wanting something easy, frugle, and effective for my shower. Thanks to everyone who has already tried this and left comments. So many options to try I just know I have found the right recipe.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I was another skeptical person but I just tried it on what I thought were clean shower walls. Now they are clean.

We've also had an orangish stain on the textured floor of the shower that NOTHING has taken off. I had tried 2-3 different shower cleaners, bleach, toilet bowl cleaner, etc. Guess what? This simple cleaner took it right off.

Thank you so much Jillee for another great product replacement. I'll never buy commercial tub/shower cleaner again.

    ReplyDelete
  63. This is soaking in my shower/tub right now. Can't wait to scrub it off and see if my results are as stellar as everyone claims... a little worried about my white grout, but I've found that comet leaves it slightly green if not rinsed well, so I'm sure that it can be remedied.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Can't wait to hear how you liked it Lauren.

I finally got around to using it in my shower (I did my boys shower for the post) and once again...I was BLOWN AWAY by the results! I didn't even think my shower really needed it...but I swear it cuts through soap scum you didn't even know you had. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Okay - so I finally tried this... and it works great. Used a 2 to 1 ratio of vinegar (as suggested), waited maybe 3 minutes, and my shower is clean and shiny. Very little if any scrubbing. In my opinion, this works better than the works and definitely doesn't have the fumes! Hooray. Thanks for the post!

  66. my shower is soaking as we speak :) hope it works well! no one ever commented back to the lady that asked earlier in the post about the toilet...i too have very hard water...we are on a well & i guess it also has a little rust in it...it stains our toilets horribly & all of it does not come off when i clean them...anybody have a suggestion for this?? i HATE that my toilets look dirty when they are NOT!!

  67. This worked great - used 2 cups heated white vinegar and then added 1 c liquid Dawn detergent. Sprayed on and let sit for one hour. Followed up on the tough soap scum with magic eraser and looks amazing! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  68. This works just as good if not BETTER than any chemical cleaner I have tried! LOVE!

I added several drops of essential oils to the mix and it made a TREMENDOUS difference in the smell!

Also, I used Clear Palmolive instead of the Dawn. That might be a good option for those with white grout :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I used this on my clear shower curtain and it worked beautifully! No more taking the curtain down to wash with bleach in the washing machine! I also used it on the shower and shower fixtures. I didn't realize we had soap scum in there (duh) until I used this stuff on it. Wow!

    ReplyDelete
  70. One reason the Dawn may make it work so well is that many soaps contain an element of fat/oil. In more conventional soap there are petroleum products (usually with fancy chemical names). Castille soap is made with olive oil and many organic/natural soaps contain shea butter, cocoa butter or olive oil. Orginally soap was made with lard. Soooo...Dawn breaks up grease (as does vinegar).

    ReplyDelete
  71. And to the people who are having problems with toilet bowl staining, I have heard that denture tablets are what the professional house cleaners use. I know a person with really, really hard water and she uses "The Works." I believe that this is acid so be careful. :)

  74. made this today and it worked amazing! I did cut the Dawn in half after reading previous comments and other the having to stand back once or twice (from the smell) because I went spray crazy, I love how clean the tub came out. I have been using straight vinegar to clean for quite a while but the addition of the Dawn made my glass doors come out so clean!! I have spent so much money on cleaners over the years and finally found something that works. So glad I found your site!

  76. Hello! I'm reading from Hungary (Europe). I love your recepies!! I haven't found a really good, and easy tub cleaner yet. Ant it is so easy I tried it immediately, and it works! Here in Hungary dawn dishwasing liquid isn't available, I used my Frosch dishwashing liquid, and this was so good as dawn, I think, because my bath, and my tube are brilliant :)
    Thanks Annamarie

  77. Hi. I made several items off your blog since this past weekend....no grate laundry soap, the coconut shampoo, the grated laundry soap and also this tub cleaner. I do think it helped with getting rid of the scum but it didn't touch my hard water stains at all. Do you have something else for this? Thanks! Jill M

  78. I saw this on Pinterest a couple of months ago but was afraid to try the acidic vinegar solution on a fiberglass shower, but it appears from the posts here that no one has experienced any problems with that. I'm off to purchase a galloon of vinegar to make this and the homemade fabric softener. Thanks again for the great ideas you share on this blog.

  79. I'm not a fan of Dawn (consider it a toxic product in our home), so I mix the vinegar with Dr Bronners Sal Suds (not the Castile soap, they say that mixing it with an acid cancels out the soaps cleaning properties). A bottle of Sal Suds will last ages because it's really concentrated. Always add the Sal Suds (I use 1tbs) last, because it will foam over.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Dawn is used to wash wildlife after an oil spill. So I wouldn't consider it a toxic product. If you rinse well I see no issues. I am going to be using this on my circa-1950's shower and tub today. Nothing ever gets it clean so I really hope this works as well for me as it has for everyone else.
