Make Your Own Gardener's Hand Scrub

I love a great idea that is both useful for my home AND something that would make a great GIFT!

This "Gardener's Hand Scrub" fits the bill PERFECTLY!

Kate at The Gaines Gang made these as end of the year Teacher Gifts...but this would make a wonderful gift to just about ANYONE who goes any gardening at all!

I used two different sizes of Ball jars, the 8 oz. and the 12 oz., and filled them 3/4 full of sugar.

I then added Dawn dish soap (the pink kind with with Olay Beauty Hand Renewal in it) until it reached just below the bottom of the mouth of the jar.

Stir the sugar and soap together....adding sugar a little at a time until it's a paste-like consistency. You don't want it to be too runny!

It smells SO good and the light pink color it makes when mixed with the white sugar is SO pretty. :-)

I added some jute twine as a "ribbon" and I THOUGHT about printing out a cute label...but didn't quite get around to it.  Yet.

But a label could include the instructions: To wash the dirt off your hands, use a small amount and rub. The sugar works like an abrasive to remove the dirt, and the soap washes it all away.

A lovely and practical gift for yourself or a friend is today's.....

  1. that is super cute! you could always add some chalkboard paint to the outside of the jar instead of a label! :)

  5. PS--didn't you have a recipe for using soap bars in products without having to grate them? Put them in the microwave to melt or something? I think I forgot to pin that one!

  6. This is something that the kids can help make too, which makes a teacher's gift all the sweeter. :)

  9. Do you suppose I could use sea salt if you didn't want to use sugar? Great idea. Thanks.

  10. Melissa, my thought would be that salt could burn if you have any little picks or sores on your hands and since most gardeners I know tend to, I'd avoid the salt. On the other hand, I sure don't like the idea of washing my hands with sugar so I wonder what else could be used.

  14. Oh...I've read that you can use sand (clean sand, of course) in place of the sugar in scrubs like these!

  15. I wonder how this would work for greasy hands??? My husband is a mechanic and he is allergic to some of the hand-cleaners. He wears latex gloves so his hands aren't too bad just a few spots once in awhile... I will have to give this a try!

  16. Anonymous with the greasy handed husband, I bet you could customize this with any kind of moisurizing dish soap that your husband might like! Go for it!

Jillee, thanks again for an awesome idea! LOVE your blog!!

  17. Winters in Kansas can be pretty dry so I make a sugar scrub using 2 parts sugar to 1 part bath oil or baby oil. The sugar is a great exfoliant AND is healing for the skin; the baby oil keeps skin moist. I use it every other day and never get the "dry skin itchies" any more!

  18. Jillee, I posted a link on your FB for about 7 or 8 different types of cleaners that all start out with citrus peels. It's especially exciting because lemons must be in season. Several stores running sales on 2lb bags of organic lemons. I am buying a bunch of bags this week to make limoncello and preserved (salted) lemons for indian food. These cleaners will be a great project compliment to go with those.

  19. Jillee, I love your posts. You find the most practical and fun ideas. And you make them super fun to read. Thanks.

  20. I don't think sand would be a good idea since it doesn't dissolve like salt/sugar does. Eventually you'd have a nasty pipe situation on hand!

  22. Just wanted you to know that I love your blog!!!. I am tired of spending so much on laundry soap, fabric softner and anything else these days. We bought a house this last summer and my husband had unexpected back surgery in November and I had a heart attack in Jan. to simply put it money has been tight. (Everything has turned out great we are both healthly and back to work). So I was looking to find ways to save some money and found your blog. Most of my friends and family think I am crazy making homemade laundry soap..but I have had several ask how I make it. I have been giving them enough to do a couple of loads with the directions and they are hooked too! Now they ask when they see me what else I am making !!LOL Again thanks so much for doing all the work so I can save sooo much money!

  24. It would be fun to include a wooden popsicle or a Tongue depresser (like in Dr's office) stick to apply it with:)

  25. Hi Jill,I work in a factory, and come home with ground in dirt(oil, mineral spirits) on my arms (from rubbing them against my filthy shirt while working)that is hard to get off. I made a batch of this tonight and scrubbed my arms. OMG! It worked wonderful, smelled wonderful, and my arms feel soft and smooth. I wear gloves, so my hands are not an issue, but my hands feel good too. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I also recently made your homemade laundry soap (the dry version) and I love it too. Thank you again.

Michelle...that is wonderful! Tonight I was handling blueberries and realized my hands were stained blue. Got out the scrub...worked like a charm. :-) LOVE that stuff!
