Make Your Own Homemade Hairspray and Hair Detangler

I am constantly amazed by the intelligent people who read this blog. You provide me with so much interesting material to research and present. So Thank You and keep 'em coming!

This blog post idea actually came from one of my sister's (who just happens to also be an intelligent reader of this blog AND who just happens to have a blog of her own that you should check out!)

She has two little girls, 8 and 6 years old, and is in that phase of Mommy life when she is constantly "fixing" their hair. The younger of the two has very fine hair that tangles easily, combined with a very tender head....so using some sort of detangler after hair washing (and even when her hair is dry) is a must!  She ran out of her store-bought brand of detangler the other day and mentioned to me that I should do a post about an homemade alternative.

Well one thing led to another and in my researching of a hair DETANGLER, I came across some interesting homemade versions of hair SPRAY! As a matter of fact...you are not going to believe how simple it is to make! I mean really....you're not going to believe it. I didn't believe it until I made it AND tried it.  And now....I believe! :-)

Let's start with the hairSPRAY:

Homemade Hairspray

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons sugar
2 Tablespoons rubbing alcohol
6-8 drops essential oils (optional)

Heat water to a boil and turn off heat source. Add 2 tsps of sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Then add 2 tablespoons rubbing alcohol and 6-8 drops of your favorite essential oil scent (optional). Once again I chose Lavender...because I love it! :-)   And THAT ladies and gentlemen...is it!

However, according to Diane at dkmommyspot.com there are 3 SIMPLE but KEY TIPS to make this work:

1) Find the right concentration for you.
2) Use a spray bottle with a very fine mist.
3) Wait for it to dry 20 – 30 seconds between applications.

I followed these 3 steps to the letter and was quite literally amazed at how well this stuff works! I figured I would have to use 4 or 5 applications before it was a strong enough "hold" (after all...it's basically SUGAR WATER!) but after just ONE misting...it held my hair in place quite nicely. I didn't even bother with a second application. And an added bonus...the sugar water actually adds a little extra shine to your hair. And really....who couldn't use a little extra shine in their life! :-)

So that's homemade hair concoction #1.

#2 is the.....

Homemade Hair Detangler

Did I say the hair SPRAY was simple to make???  Well.........then THIS recipe is going to blow your mind! ;-)

Here's what you'll need:

A spray bottle
Hair conditioner of your choice
Water

Here's what you'll do:

1.  Fill your spray bottle two-thirds full with water.
2.  Add conditioner of your choice to finish filling the bottle.
3.  Shake the bottle well, making sure the conditioner and water are thoroughly mixed.
4.  Spray the mixture into your hair and brush as you would normally.

Are you OK?  Do you need to sit down and taker a breather after that exhaustive process?  ;-)

The fact that we spend SO much of our hard-earned money on these products that are SO SIMPLE and INEXPENSIVE to make at home continues to boggle my brain. Today's post is the perfect example. It's just a good thing I have such SMART READERS to point out the painfully obvious to people like me. :-)

2 SIMPLE recipes for tidy tresses is today's.....

  5. Oh my gosh! You are a genius! I have allergies and have the hardest time finding hairsprays that aren't scented or simply unscented and just plain stinky that won't bother my allergies. I am SO going to try this homemade hairspray as it I can choose my own scent like something citrus that doesn't bother my allergies. Woo hoo! Thanks so much!!!!

  7. Thanks so much for the detangler. I'm definitely going to try this. I have two daughters with curly hair, you just have to look at their hair and its tangled. We're a family of South African expats living in Taiwan, where hair detanglers just don't exist. I bought some in South Africa on our recent visit home, and was already envisioning my Mom having to send us crate loads when this lot runs out. So sorry about the long comment, but a million thanks again.

  8. FIRST I love your blog! when my daughter was young and I was a single mom, I actually made this detangler when I was out of the store bought and had no money. Have been using it since and now use it for granddaughter's very long very fine very curly hair!

  10. I LOVE your blog. It just makes my day! I was wondering where the easiest/most common place to find these essential oils would be?

  11. I've been making spray on detangler like this for years. Works wonders!

  12. Love your ideas Jillee! I will definately try these. Here is another tip for tangled hair. My daughter has curly hair and it is always tangled. Now, when I shampoo her hair, I shampoo as usual and rinse. Then, I have mixed a bottle of vinegar and water (probably 1 part vinegar to 8 parts water...though I've never measured)squirt all over her hair and let it set for a minute and rinse. Then I condition her hair. It's amazing! The tangles seem to all but fall out of her hair. And as an added bonus, the vinegar gives her hair a beautiful shine. I also have curly hair, and have used it, but use caution if you have colored hair. It strips the color out. Guess I'll just have to use your detangler.

  13. I have recently come across your blog and it is now my new holy grail! I have a little girl with fine blonde tangles. There are a lot of things to try.

  14. Love this idea! I still have some of the rosemary mint conditioner from making your recipe for fabric softener...my daughter is going to love this...best yet, it's budget friendly for her as a college student in the fall! Thanks so much for all of your fabulous ideas!

  15. I love this idea!! I'm definitely going to try it. I wonder if the hairspray would leave sticky residue on your skin? That's my one pet peeve about hairspray, and my current hairspray is one of the few that won't make your skin sticky. So, it will be interesting to try!

  16. I was thinking you could use your favorite/signature perfume in the hairspray instead of the escential oil. Afterall it is made with alcohol. I never like hairsprays that contend with your perfume.

  17. I am just curious, but does this attract bugs in the summer? I would think the sugar in the hairspray would be an issue. Great idea though! :)

  18. Love your blog Jillie, I use homemade detangler for my dog. if you buy it from a groomer it costs about $16, homemade cost about 10 cents. Works great for Golden Doodles.

  19. I have the same question as Heather E. I guess it is because I live in Coastal Georgia and we have no-see'ems (gnats) that burrow in your hair, your clothes, your eyes, mosquitoes the size of buses, you get the picture. Anyway, the sugar immediately made me think of them. Living around so much marsh it is a part of our life we have to accept, but I don't want to encourage them. Has anyone tried this (outside of winter)? Does anyone know if the alcohol helps with this or is it just a drying agent?
THANKS to anyone and everyone that answers!
    Diane

  20. My mom was a hairdresser in another life and she usually doesn't bother with a spray detangler, she just takes a shower and doesn't wash out all of her conditioner. Obviously this doesn't work on dry hair though. :D

  21. You're kidding me! I just wasted $9 on Kid Hair Detangler!! Why didn't someone post this on Pinterest sooner so I could have saved myself $9 :-(
    Thanks for posting!!!

  22. Jillee, you are amazing. I keep finding stuff you've posted linked on Pinterest. I have become a HUGE fan of your blog!!! I have a 3 year old daughter who keeps using her detangler as a play spray. I refuse to go out and buy anymore. Now, I have a cheaper, DIY version thanks to you! Thanks sooooo much for posting!

  23. I made the hairspray last night. OMG, so easy and works great. I need to add some fragrance though, it just has an alcohol smell right now

  24. I'm going to try the detangler on my little Maltese dog today! Thanks!

  25. I'm also wondering if the sugar would attract bugs. I live in Minnesota and mosquitos are no joke in the summer. Any body know if it will attract bugs or if there is something that can be used in place of the sugar?

  26. Just a thought on the leave in...forgive me if someone mentioned this. I use the same method for my curly girls but you need to use distilled water if you plan to leave the mixture in the bottle for any length of time. Using regular water can cause bacteria to grow. It is definitely an effective an inexpensive way to make leave in.

  27. I did that (the detanger) YEARS ago when my daughter (now 38) was little. I always just guessed at how much conditioner to use.
    I don't need a detangler now myself.

That hair spray is quite interesting! I'd be afraid all that alcohol would be very drying. But then again, the sugar would act as a humectant I guess. And Most commercial hair sprays have a lot of alcohol too!

Good question Heather, Diane, & Jessica C.

  28. Wow! I just made the hair detangler myself the other day and was going to suggest the idea to you, but you beat me to it! So simple I can't believe I didn't think of it before!

    ReplyDelete
  29. If you think about it, all hairspray attract bugs, I would think if you put orange essence, tea tree (yucky smell to me) or something citrus-y oil or essence in the mix, it might deter bugs and smell good too (except the tea tree oil, lol!).

  30. wow! Lots of great comments!

Detangler for doggie hair??? Didn't even occur to me. Excellent idea!!

I think the alcohol could be omitted if you are worried about it being too drying.

Good call on the 'distilled' water if you're not going to be using it up fast enough.

Heidi...lots of sources for essential oils. Amazon.com is a good place to start. Or doTERRA.com.

Toinette...you are welcome! Sounds like this post was made for you and your girls! lol. Loved your comment about just LOOKING at your girls' hair and it gets tangled! lol.

Tea tree oil would probably be a bug deterrent! lol.

Thanks everyone for the wonderfully nice comments!!!!! :-)) Made my day.

  32. I posted just above you Jill regarding the tea tree oil for bugs repellent (and everything else, lol!) I just made your hairspray recipe this morning and thanks for saving me $20 that I normally spend on a can of hairspray! This really works! I had a fine mist pump spray from a nasty smelling JASON hairspray that I dumped out and used it in its place. I am trying to go more natural product way and this works for me! Thank you!
