Organizing The Dreaded Pots and Pans Cabinet!

Let's talk about PET PEEVES. We ALL have them, but I feel like I have a lot of them. Probably too many. Although I'm not sure...how many pet peeves is too many pet peeves? And what exactly does it say about a person when they have a lot of them? I like to think I'm a fairly positive and upbeat person, I really don't like to dwell on negative things.

So why am I plagued with PPS??? (pet peeve syndrome).

I of course had to do some research on the subject and while I didn't find a whole lot on the subject...I did find this helpful article about how to use MEDITATION to get over your pet peeves!
I might just have to try "replenishing my aura with fresh golden cosmic energy". :-)

Then maybe cupboards like THIS won't make me want to hurl profanities at innocent bystanders and throw heavy objects.

By a show of hands please....who else has a "pots and pans cabinet" that drives them crazy???  I know I can't be the only one who fights with their cookware!

Well, after today....the fight is over! No more heavy lids tumbling out onto my bare toes....and no more cookie sheets being accidentally dislodged from their precarious perches and making enough noise to wake the dead! I finally reached my pet peeve boiling over point today with that cabinet and took action. The ironic thing...it really didn't even take that much ACTION! I have been grumbling and murmuring about that stupid cabinet for YEARS and it literally took me a couple of hours TOPS to rectify the situation. Sometimes I can be so dim. :-)

Here is a rundown of the steps it took to turn the cabinet from hell
into a happy, organized space:

1. Take all the crap out of the cabinet and lay it out on the floor so you can actually see what's rattling around in there and causing all the trouble.

2. Get rid of the stuff you don't use! Seems obvious...but there was a plastic "vessel" of some sort I found in there that I had NO idea what it was...let alone where it originally came from. Gone.

3. Take the stuff that you RARELY use (but still use on occasion) and find another place to store it! There is no reason to be fighting with your pots and pans because there is a giant roaster in there that you only use once a year a Christmastime for roasting Chex mix!!

4.  Put your "thinking cap on" and rethink the space. Focus on efficiency! Enlisting the hubster's help....we moved the shelf just 3 notches higher...which allowed for the cookie sheets, muffin tins, etc to be stored VERTICALLY rather than HORIZONTALLY.  A MAJOR space and sanity saver! :-)  (The vertical organizers were less than $5 each.)

5. Spiff it up! First give it a good cleaning!  I sprayed a mixture of 1/2 ammonia and 1/2 water all over the inside of the cabinet...let it set for a few minutes...then wiped it out with a damp cloth. Then I gave both shelves a nice new layer of shelf liner.

6. Add a few "accessories" to complete the "makeover". I hung two INEXPENSIVE adjustable curtains rods ($1.77 each) on four eye hooks (.97 cents) on the insides of the cabinet doors to create a place to keep my most often used lids. Searching for lids is....guess what? Another pet peeve of mine! lol.

7. Finally, return the pared down pots and pans inventory to the cabinet and stand back and admire your work! Ahhhhhh.....much better!

Stick a fork in this project because IT IS DONE! On to the next one! :-)

Taking a BIG BITE out of my long list of pet peeves is today's.....

  3. It is amazing what one vertical organizer can do, isn't it!! I recently cleaned out a cupboard like that and I love that they are stored vertically rather than underneath each other! Awesome storage solution!

  4. Jill, did you post this because you heard me screaming at the inanimate objects in my not one, but two crammed, packed cabinets all the way from Georgia yesterday? I think I can deal with everything, but the lids(well not really, but they drive me the craziest)! I think I have too many and several are to thick for your solution. In all of your research, did you find any other (wider) solutions?

  5. I want to be able to do this so bad, unfortunately, I live in an apartment and have hardly any kitchen whatsoever. I have no bottom cabinets, and I hate it! My pots and pans are stored underneath the stove, and they do not like to cooperate with me there. Sigh. I'm working on finding some sort of solution though.

  6. Oh I just <3 the idea of keeping the most used lids on the door. I too, do not enjoy digging for lids. Thanks for the ideas Jill!

  7. So question how do I keep it that way when its my sons chore to do the dishes!!!! UGH he is driving me crazy its a weekly fight. I am a chef and run a kitchen by profession and I can not stand an unorganized kitchen!!! This is great will try this on my next day off. I have all ready redone my whole pantry. Thank goodness for my Tupperware business to oraganize all my pantry items in clear containers to know what I need.

  10. I going to be doing my pots and pans later today love the idea of the organizer!!!!! As for the lids I keep all mine in the drawer under the stove! Don't have to worry about them falling on my toes!

  11. I LOVE your blog! I have been reading back through some of your older posts when I have a few "free" minutes, which isn't too often as a full-time student with 3 kids and 2 jobs! One tip, which takes a little time, but in the end is totally worth it is to cover your cabinet/pantry shelves/drawers with floor tile! That's right, buy cheap sticky-back floor tile, cut to size (put the partials to the back) and stick them down! No more shelf paper and if something spills, just wipe up with hot, soapy water!

  12. Looks great! I really like the way that you used the curtain rods and cup hooks. Brilliant! I am pinning that!

  13. Ah ha, busted, no more teasing me about all of my pet peeves. LOL but I am totally with you on this one. I have to take care of the pans myself or it drives me crazy, I go behind anyone else that takes care of them and put them away properly. I have almost got the husband on board with how they are supposed to go and it is so nice. Great job on this project, I love the idea of curtain rods for the lids, that will make things much easier.

  14. Diane...there are bigger (deeper) curtain rods that would accommodate wider lids. They might work well on the inside of the pantry door...I've seen that before. (And yes, I heard you. did you hear me? lol)

susan...that is an age old problem. I am always finding things in the "pots and pans" cabinet that have NO business being there! I wish I had a One Good Thing to solve that! lol.

Danielle...I think your pet peeves were contagious! lol. Or I'm just getting more and more cranky in my old age. ;-)

  15. Great post! I find a messy "pots and pans" cabinet as much as a peeve as you. Now I'm off to to find a rack for my muffin tins and sheets. Thank you so much!

  16. Love the change! I wish I could do something better with my cabinet. I'm using a corner cabinet with a lazy susan and I hate it. HATE IT. I really don't know what else to do though. I don't have any cabinets that are wide enough for my larger pieces aside from the corner cabinet and I have nothing with adjustable shelves... darn old homes!

  17. I am unable to use the curtain rod/cabinet door solution, so I used small tension rods and store my lids and cookie sheets vertically. Works like a charm!

  18. Oh Jillee,
I have been fighting that dreaded pots and pans cupboard for years. I have organized and reorganized to no avail. I almost fell out of my chair at the genius of storing the cookie sheets vertically. Duh! I cant believe I didn't think of this sooner. Thank you for blogging about the dreaded pan cupboard, a project that is now on my spring cleaning to do list. Oh, and P.S. Your cupboard looks fantastic!!!

  21. Totally off subject but... I noticed the Pampered Chef pots with the hard water stains.(: o sorry) I have had the same issue! I have moved and my new home THANKFULLY has not got the same hard water problems, anyway we could get a One Good way to get rid once and for all of the stains?!? Oh pretty please : ) BTW... Your after picture is totally inspiring and I felt an amazing sense of peace when I looked at it after the many mashed toes of days gone bye!
